From the initial design stages “the Cottage” located mid-hill on the estate above a vineyard was intended at least for dwelling purposes to be a cut above any we had ever conceived or built in our lives. Julie wanted to incorporate the distinctive “bastard-hip” octagonal of design of our hilltop home’s dining room as a key design feature of the Cottage deck. Construction of Eagles Nest cottage took approximately a year.
We intended the cottage (it’s actually a well appointed, home) to be an integral part of our Eagles Nest Operations, serving both our guests and as a central focal point for our social gatherings. For that reason, it has a full-size granite and stainless kitchen and an authentic wood-fired pizza oven is situated nearby as well as ample adjacent patio and deck area for entertaining.
Since it was intended as high end vacation lodging, it was furnished with upscale antiques and wine-themed décor capturing an Italian and winery theme. Landscaping including roses, grapevines, natural boulders, and a classic Italian fountain complete the venue.
Viewed from the estate’s stone entry gate, the Cottage is distinctively perched mid-hill nestled amongst huge granite boulders characteristic of the area and the estate, and of course, above a vineyard. The octagonal white stone faced deck is visually prominent almost giving the illusion of a classic carousel minus the horses and bright colors. The classic forest green roofs on the estate blend with the deep green of the ancient Coastal Live Oak trees on the property.
In keeping with County requirements for second dwellings the Cottage mirrors the main dwelling’s Craftsman architecture and colors. Our architect, the very talented Travis Deal of Carlsbad designed the Cottage. We met Travis through a relative in the construction business.  He previously worked with us on a remodel on our home in the city but he normally deals solely with multi-million beach and coastal homes but he works with us based upon our previous ties
